Music Program

My name is Maritza Lynch and I am the music teacher at Academia Sandoval.

I teach ECE-6th grade general music, Band and Choir .This is my eight year in DPS and my seventeen as Kodaly/Orff music specialist. I’m coming from Lima- Peru where I received my Bachelor of Music Education in the National Conservatory of Lima. I moved to Denver in 2003 and I was able to complete my master’s degree in Linguistically Diverse Education at Regis University in 2010. I have taught in my country in Elementary schools, conservatory and in the UNIFE University.

I am also the director of the Dual Language choir Aplausos de Colorado Children’s Chorale since 2005.
My family includes my husband James (Real Estate Agent and Electronic music composer) and my four- year – old
Jimmy who will be a dancer, singer o movie maker someday.

In our music class we follow the ORFF-SCHULWERK method that is a holistic and integrated musical approach created by the German composer Carl Orff. It encourages children to be active, creative participants in the music making process. We explore authentic cultural songs, dances, music and literature. Typical musical activities in our music class include singing, speaking, playing musical instruments, moving, dancing, listening, dramatizing and reading music.

LANGUAGE
We alternate language used in common areas by week by teaching and communicating with students in the target language.

PROGRESS REPORTS
3rd year Primary, Lower Elementary and Upper Elementary students will receive music progress reports during the school reporting time. Students are formally and informally evaluated on age appropriate skills in the following areas of evaluation: Effort & participation; Music literacy & composition; Rehearsals & Performance skills and Respect for instruments, music materials and peers.

CONCERTS AND PARTICIPATION
3rd year Primary students and Lower Elementary students will participate in one musical concert during the school year. Children are given opportunities to have special roles (solos) on an alternating basis. Behavior, the child’s interest, and attendance are factors into the decision. Each concert features folktales around the world, where children explore geography, culture, music, and art from various cultures.

Upper Elementary Students (4th-6th graders) will have the opportunity to select and participate in one music ensemble during the school year. They can join the Choir or Band. These groups will have several concerts throughout the school year and the requirements to be part of these great ensembles are: positive can-do-attitude and to have a great time! Because the study of music has a direct relationship to the measured success of the individual/student via reasoning, creative thinking, decision-making, and problem solving; we highly encourage our students to be part of one of our ensembles.

THANKS TO THE VH1 SAVE THE MUSIC FOUNDATION ACADEMIA SANDOVAL HAS BAND INSTRUCTION DURING SCHOOL TIME AND INSTRUMENTS TO LOAN!

All 4th-6th grade Sandoval band students can borrow an instrument and learn to play it! They only need to be committed to practice daily on the instrument outside of the school for at least 20 minutes. Band practice is during school hours. Students will rehearse together and in ensembles in order to receive a quality music education on the instrument, (please, read the Band practice schedule). 3rd grade students are also invited to participate on the Brass instrument ensemble on Wednesdays 8:00-8:40 am. It is expected that students and parents will handle the instrument with care and will be responsible to replace it in case of damage or lost. Come see me if you are interested.
